Putting pictures of reception children in a newspaper to buy
|
Random question, but in Bristol and south glos there seems to be a 'thing' where local newspapers go round reception classes in the schools, take pictures of the new children together and then publish them in the paper for anyone to buy. Am I the only one who thinks this is a little odd?
Why would anyone care about it as a story? Why would anyone want a picture of a bunch of other people's kids for any reason aside from Millie style ones? If the school wants to sell pictures of the classes why don't they do it themselves?
I don't get it. Happened to my sons class last year (without any parents being told - we found out when a friend whose son started at another school said our sons picture was nice) and I just don't see the logic behind it at all. This year they've made a slide show of local school kids photos on Facebooktoo. I'm bemused.

we both know that's a lie.
Look at my posting history - nothing for ages then a couple of lame jokes about paedophilia. We both know this is as good as I get.

Isn't gratuitous just a made-up word used by feminist groups and tree-hugging noofters? Not that I like to label folk.

You sign a form (or don't) at the beginning of every school year giving consent to this stuff. I made certain notes on the form about school publications being fine but newspapers being questionable. I don't mind a bit of local noncery but draw the line at complete strangers.

Can't see what the problem is.
If you're worried about the Milhouse ilk then I doubt very much he'll be wanking away to a grainy photo of your ugly sprog.
Pretty pathetic if you don't allow your kid in that sort of photo for fear some nonce might be reading It thinking 'phwoar I bet she was hot in her day'

I know someone who works for a school photography company. Shit money for the photographer. £80 approx a day, long hours (i.e. drive to wherever in the country, equipment set up in the school ready to go at 9am) seconds to take each portrait, you then have to take the files back to the photography company for them to work on. You do your training for 2 weeks beginning in August, then work starts end of August through to end of Oct. Once the school photography season finishes, then that is when you get paid. So from beginning of August through to the end of October, you have to live off thin air. The schools get a massive percentage from sales.

Bristol Post do it don't they - called 'First Class'? At my school only children of parents who have given photographic permissions are allowed to be in the photo. They do another one in Y6 too I think.

I think its a tradition isn't it? They still do it. My kids has been in one when she started school and another as she started a new school and was in a photo of new starters.
I don't see the harm in it. We kept them and she can have them when she is older and show her kids and so on. Nice little thing for grandparents.
I suppose until this thread I'd not thought about it but it seems a shame if concerns about nonces should stop a tradition. Sod 'em. If nonces want pictures of kids they can get them. I mean, how far do you go? Ban Facebook?

It probably would increase the circulation of the school told us it was going to happen!

I suppose it's publicity for the school and it increases the paper's circulation by at least the number of children pictured. Money rules. Mind you I don't see any harm in it.

Unfortunately if some nonce wants to take a pic of your or anyone else's kid they can do it easy enough without buying one from a local rag.

Yeah some of us argued this last year, but the school said it was covered by a form we signed when the children started saying it was ok for their photo to be taken and possibly used in the local press. I pointed out that, tonne, that was more suggesting that the local press might attend a sports day or summer fete and your child may happen to be in a picture, not that the paper would come in specifically to take pictures that aren't for a story and are published with a big 'want to buy one of these pictures?' advert next to it.
I can't believe anyone would think it's a good idea

Seems an odd thing to do these days, when parents are not even allowed to film their kids in a nativity play or similar!

I would of thought you can object and request it to be taken offline or not used.
